Are you interested in joining the iMPACT direct Board and help champion African led solutions by connecting local nonprofits with the trust, funding and opportunities they need to create lasting change?
Who we are
At iMPACT direct, we believe that the people closest to the challenges are best placed to create lasting solutions. That is why we work alongside African nonprofits that are helping communities move out of extreme poverty.
We give individuals and organisations the opportunity to directly support impactful projects led by African nonprofits. Beyond funding, we walk alongside our partner organisations for three years, helping them grow, strengthen their work and become leading changemakers in their communities.
How we make this happen
We support locally-led NGOs in Africa with 1) visibility, 2) access to funding, 3) training, sharing expertise and matchmaking; and 4) trust-based relations.
Our team is based in Ghana, Kenya and the Netherlands, united by a shared belief that African led solutions deserve the resources, trust and recognition they need to thrive.
Why you should join us
We are looking for a Board Member in the Netherlands or East/West Africa with a strong civil-society network, an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in creating social impact, to bring their professional perspective to our Board and support iMPACT direct in advancing its mission.
1.1 Tasks & roles
Overall role of the board:
To oversee that organisation’s strategies, activities and results are according to the foundation’s purpose, and ensure the right resources and right governance to achieve them, including identifying risks and mitigation measures.
Powers:
- Access to organisational information on organisational performance, including impact, finances and supporters base.
- Review and approve, i.e. voting power, overall strategy and policies, such as annual plans and budgets, new or adapted strategies and policies, and any contracts with the clause “subject to Board approval”.
- Decide on programs and strategy collaboratively with other board members.
- Participate in formal Board decision-making as a full Board member.
Duties:
- Monitor and understand performance of the organisation.
- Promote and represent iMPACT direct in public and support access to networks and opportunities.
- Guide and support management.
- Bring an INGO/ civil-society perspective and network to Board discussions and decision-making.
- Support the Board in building and maintaining equal, respectful partnerships with locally-led NGOs.
- Support the Chair, Secretary and other Board members in ensuring effective Board processes.
Specific role of a Board Member:
- Brings their professional perspective to the Board, reflecting that iMPACT direct’s work takes place in West Africa, East Africa and Europe.
- Works with, or has worked with, African-led NGOs on an equal basis as a partner rather than from a donor-recipient relationship.
- Supports an entrepreneurial way of working: helping the Board start new things small, test and learn, and improve or scale what works.
- Contributes network and experience from the African nonprofit or social-impact sector to strengthen the Board’s decision-making.
- Participates in formal Board decision-making and contributes actively to discussions and strategic oversight.
- Supports the Chair and Secretary in Board preparations where relevant.
- Helps ensure the Board and team remain diverse in background, location and experience.
1.2 Time efforts
- The Board meets three times a year, in online meetings (March, July, December).
- Preparations before Board meetings (around 2h per meeting).
- Coordination with the Chair, Secretary and management ahead of meetings.
- Follow-up on agreed actions after each meeting.
- Other actions between meetings (approximately 2h).
- Voluntary informal events or meetings.
- Terms of Service
Our board members are usually selected for a period of three years. And can be re-elected after that.
- Requirements
- Passion for iMPACT direct’s mission of shifting power in the aid sector.
- Demonstrated experience working with, or as part of, African-led NGOs on an equal basis.
- Entrepreneurial spirit – comfortable starting new things small, testing, and improving or scaling.
- Commitment and time to take an active role in the Board.
- Based in Netherlands, East Africa or West Africa.
- Brings network and experience of working with local and international NGOs.
- Preferably: More than 5 years experience in the nonprofit sector, social entrepreneurship or civil society in Africa.
What we offer
- Working in an international and dedicated Board with colleagues from different professional and cultural backgrounds.
- Contributing to social impact: Shift of Power in the aid sector, strengthening civil society organisations (50% women-led), and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (1, 2 and 4): No Poverty, Zero Hunger and Quality Education.
- An opportunity to bring the African civil-society perspective into the strategic leadership of an organisation shifting power in the aid sector.
- This is a volunteer position; legally it is not allowed to receive payments from the foundation, you also represent as a board member, to prevent a conflict of interest.
